TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned Israel's attack on Iran in the early hours of Friday and called for maximum restraint from member countries. He said any military escalation in the Middle East must be condemned.
"He is particularly concerned about Israel's attack on Iran's nuclear installations while discussions between Iran and the United States on the status of Iran's nuclear program are ongoing," said Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General.
Antonio also, said Farhan, reminded the UN member states of their obligation to act in accordance with the UN Charter and international law. He also urged both parties to show maximum restraint, avoiding any means to prevent further conflict, a situation that the region can hardly bear.
In a statement on Friday, June 13, 2025, the head of the UN-supported atomic watchdog announced that Iranian authorities had confirmed that the Natanz enrichment site had been "impacted without affecting the existing radiation levels". The Iranian nuclear safety authorities also reported that the Isfahan and Fordow locations were not affected by Israel's attack.
"I have repeatedly stated that nuclear facilities should not be attacked, regardless of the context or circumstances, as it could endanger humans and the environment. Such attacks have serious implications for nuclear safety, security, and protection, as well as regional and international peace and security," said Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Quoted from Al Jazeera, Rafael reported the presence of radiological and chemical contamination inside the Natanz facility, where Iran produces uranium enriched up to 60 percent. However, he added that the contamination "can be addressed with appropriate action," and stated that the IAEA is ready to send nuclear security experts to help secure the site if requested.
"I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation," he added.
Citing from the UN.org, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo also urged both sides to show maximum restraint at this critical moment. According to her, peaceful resolution through negotiation remains the best way to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program.
"We must do everything possible to avoid a larger conflict that would have significant global consequences," she told the council.
