TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Albufeira has introduced new rules to prevent inappropriate behavior in public places. The southern Portuguese city is known for its stunning beaches. During the summer, authorities are stepping up their surveillance of inappropriate tourist behaviour.
Fines vary depending on the type of behaviour breach. The heaviest penalties are for being naked or engaging in sexual acts in public, ranging from £426 to £1,800.
Other offences such as being partially naked outside designated beach areas, urinating or defecating in public and making excessive noise can also be punished with fines ranging from £255 to £1,277. Other offences listed in the code include spitting, misuse of public furniture and abandoning shopping trolleys.
Public order
Albufeira City Council is working to restore order and cleanliness to the high-traffic tourist zone. The new rules were approved in May. Albufeira Mayor José Carlos Rolo said the regulation was another important step to combat the negative image of tourism in the municipality. "And promote harmony between the sector and the local population," he said at the time, as quoted by Travel Weekly.
By cracking down on inappropriate behavior, Portugal is reinforcing its commitment to responsible tourism and ensuring a more respectful experience for locals and international visitors.
The new regulations are in response to a series of incidents, including a viral video last year showing eight British men dancing naked in a bar in broad daylight on Albufeira's main party strip, Rua da Oura. The footage sparked widespread outrage, prompting an emergency meeting between local authorities and business owners.
Warning for British travelers
The UK Foreign Office issued a travel warning on Thursday, June 26, warning British nationals about the new regulations. "The Municipality of Albufeira has introduced a code of conduct prohibiting inappropriate behavior in public places. Take a look at the current regulations. If you break the rules, you can be fined on the spot between 150 and 1,800 euros," the agency said in a statement, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
In addition to the rules of conduct, the Foreign Office has reiterated its ongoing warning about the increased risk of forest fires in Portugal, especially during the dry season that runs from April to October. Travelers are warned that forest fires can occur quickly and unexpectedly in many areas, not just in wooded or rural areas, as quoted by Travel and Tour World.
