TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Governor of California Gavin Newsom on Monday announced a lawsuit against President of the United States Donald Trump for deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles without the state's request.
This comes amid increasing tension in Los Angeles due to anti-ICE protests that have led to riots.
The protests were launched by the city's residents to reject the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids on illegal immigrants.
"We're suing Donald Trump. This is a manufactured crisis. He is creating the fear to take over the state military and violate the U.S. constitution," said Newsom on the X platform as quoted by Anadolu.
On Saturday, Trump signed a memo to deploy at least 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles County following clashes between immigration officers and protesters.
This is the first deployment of National Guard without the state's approval since 1965.
Meanwhile, on Monday evening, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sent 700 Marines to assist the National Guard in quelling the riots in Los Angeles.
Newsom argued that this action threatens the sovereignty of the state of California.
"His illegal order can allow him to deploy military to ANY STATE HE WANTS," the governor said.
"Every governor - red or blue - should reject this overreach," Newsom said, referring to the governors of Republican-controlled states (red/Trump) or Democratic Party-controlled states (blue/Newsom).
He added that many people often exaggerate things, and the events in Los Angeles are "not like that."
"This is a clear step towards authoritarianism that threatens the foundation of our republic. We must not let it happen," said Newsom.
The protests in LA began on Friday after ICE detained hundreds of people accused of living illegally in the city.
Despite opposition, the U.S. federal government said it will continue raids on undocumented immigrants as part of Trump's tough actions.
Critics of the move accused Trump of targeting law-abiding undocumented immigrants - an essential part of the local community and economy - rather than criminals.
While campaigning in the last presidential election, Trump promised to deport the criminals.
