TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cambodia withdrew all of its athletes from the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand on Wednesday, December 10, citing security concerns amid rising tensions along the two countries’ border.
The decision was conveyed by the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) in an official letter to the Chief Executive Officer of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF), Dato' Seri Chaiyapak Siriwat.
In the letter dated December 10, the NOCC said the withdrawal followed urgent requests from athletes’ families, who expressed serious concerns over their safety and demanded their immediate return. The committee stated that the decision had to be taken swiftly to protect the Cambodian delegation.
The NOCC underscored that the move was not taken lightly, noting that Thai organizers and the National Olympic Committee of Thailand had warmly welcomed the Cambodian contingent.
Cambodia even took part in the athletes’ parade during the opening ceremony of the 33rd SEA Games at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium, although with a reduced number of participants.
In its statement, the NOCC apologized for the inconvenience caused by the sudden withdrawal after the opening ceremony. The committee said it would continue coordinating with SEAGF regarding the athletes’ return journey and any remaining administrative matters.
As of this report, neither the Thai organizing committee nor SEAGF has announced adjustments to the competition schedule or technical arrangements following Cambodia’s full withdrawal. The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has also not issued an official response regarding the impact of the move.
Cambodia had earlier withdrawn from several sports at the 2025 SEA Games. The additional eight sports dropped included men’s football, billiards and muaythai, judo, karate, pencak silat, petanque, wrestling, wushu, and sepak takraw.
With the latest decision, Cambodia, initially set to compete in 13 sports, is now entirely absent from this year’s regional sporting event.
