TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Colombian authorities have declared a state of national disaster following a powerful earthquake that struck the country on Monday morning, August 10, local broadcaster Caracol reported.
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella instructed government and military leadership to guarantee the distribution of essential resources to impacted areas.
The official decree declaring the national state of disaster is currently being drafted by the government. Emergency officials are also awaiting the arrival of first response teams in the worst-affected communities.
According to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), four Urban Search and Rescue teams from Bogota, Envigado, Yopal, and Medellin have been deployed to assist with evacuation operations.
Earlier in the day, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center initially reported a magnitude-6.8 earthquake striking Colombia. European seismologists later upgraded the tremor's magnitude to 7.4.
Meanwhile, experts in the United States issued a matching evaluation. The epicenter was positioned near the city of San Jose del Palmar in the Chocó region.
As previously reported, the death toll from the powerful earthquake in Colombia has reached 132, with another 570 people injured, as reported by Caracol television, citing the latest government data.
