Cristiano Ronaldo Sets New Records as Portugal Wins 2025 UEFA Nations League

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cristiano Ronaldo has once again made history with the Portuguese national team. In the UEFA Nations League final, the Portugal captain led his country to a dramatic victory over Spain, reinforcing his legendary status in world football.

He not only scored a crucial goal but also broke several records, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals.

Ronaldo dedicated the win to his teammates. "What a joy. First of all for this generation, which deserved a title of this magnitude, for our families. My children came here, my wife, my brother, my friends." he said, as quoted by ESPN.

Third International Triumph

Portugal’s win in the 2025 UEFA Nations League marks Ronaldo’s third major international title. He previously led Portugal to victory in the 2016 European Championship and the first UEFA Nations League in 2019.

This trophy completes a set of international achievements that Ronaldo values deeply, even more than his numerous club titles. For him, playing for Portugal and winning for his country brings unmatched pride.

"Winning for Portugal is always special. I have many titles with clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. It's tears. It's duty done and a lot of joy," he said.

"When you talk about Portugal it is always a special feeling. Being captain of this generation is a source of pride. Winning a title is always the pinnacle in a national team," added the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

Crucial Goal and Penalty Drama

Ronaldo scored his 138th goal for Portugal in the second half of the final against Spain. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after regular and extra time, pushing the game into a penalty shootout.

Spain had taken the lead twice through Zubimendi and Oyarzabal, but Portugal equalized with goals from Nuno Mendes and Ronaldo. In the shootout, goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved Morata’s penalty, while Ruben Neves secured Portugal’s 5-3 victory.

Although Ronaldo suffered an injury and was later substituted, his earlier goal proved vital. His performance throughout the tournament earned him the top scorer title and reaffirmed his pivotal role in Portugal’s continued success on the international stage.
