TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A landslide that hit the Antioquia region in Colombia due to torrential downpours since June 24 has caused 22 fatalities as of Friday, as reported by ABC News. Eight people remain missing in the disaster, according to local authorities.
Rescuers are still conducting searches for victims in Medellín, the second-largest city in Colombia, and the nearby city of Bello on Saturday.
According to a statement from the Antioquia governor's office, several new victims have been found in the Bello and Altos de Oriente areas in Medellín.
Search and rescue efforts continue to involve 391 personnel to retrieve other bodies that may still be buried under the rubble.
During the search, local authorities warned that many houses were built on sloping terrain susceptible to landslides. As a result, these residential buildings have been classified as high-risk.
The heavy rains since March have caused natural disasters resulting in casualties and property damage in various regions of Colombia.
The landslide occurred on June 24 in the mountainous area of Bello, Medellín, was caused by river overflow after heavy rainfall.
Located in the western part of the Andes, Antioquia often experiences landslides during the rainy season from April to November.
