Death Toll Rises to 5 in Indonesian School Building Collapse, Rescue Efforts Continue

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rescuers evacuated five victims from the rubble of Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school's boys dormitory in Buduran, Sidoarjo, on late Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Two of them were found dead, while three others were critically injured.

"At 08:47 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time), we successfully evacuated five victims since our last update this afternoon," said First Admiral Yudhi Bramantyo, the Director of Operations for the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.

With this addition, number of victims evacuated from the rubble has reached 18 since the building collapsed. Death toll rose to five people, while 13 others survived.

At least 100 people are wounded in this incident, suffering from minor to critical injuries.

Bramantyo confirmed that all victims previously identified with red status were successfully evacuated by Wednesday evening. He said rescuers will continue to search and evacuate dozens of other victims who reamin buried and unidentified. "We will make every possible effort tonight," Bramantyo said on Wednesday.

The boys' dormitory of Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Buduran, Sidoarjo, East Java, collapsed on Monday, September 29, 2025, while the students were performing congregational Asr prayer on the second floor, which was being used as a prayer room.

According to the school's caretaker, Abdul Salam Mujib, the 4-story building that collapsed was still under renovation. From morning until 12:00 p.m. that day, the newly cast roof of the third floor collapsed. "As far as I know, the last casting was done from this morning until noon," Mujib told the media in Sidoarjo on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Around 03:00 p.m., the newly cast roof suddenly collapsed, trapping hundreds of students who were praying on the second floor. Those in the prayer room were buried under the rubble.
