Explosions Heard in Tehran as Israel Attacks Iran's Nuclear and Military Sites

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel reportedly launched an attack on Iran on Friday, June 13, 2025, targeting nuclear facilities and military sites. The alleged strike follows warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a potential major conflict in the region.

Explosions were heard Friday morning in the Iranian capital, Tehran, according to state TV. Following the reported attack, Iran's air defenses were placed on 100 percent alert.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that retaliation from Tehran was possible in response to the operation, and Israel subsequently declared a state of emergency. "Following the State of Israel's preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future," Katz was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Oil prices surged by as much as 6 percent due to the reported attack. The alleged strike occurred after Trump had previously warned of a possible Iranian attack and indicated the U.S. was withdrawing diplomatic staff from the region.

"I don't want to say imminent, but it looks like it's something that could very well happen," Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday when asked if an Israeli attack was imminent.

Trump added that he believed a "fairly close" deal on Iran's nuclear program was close. However, he cautioned that an Israeli attack on its arch-foe could destroy the chances of reaching an agreement.

The former U.S. leader did not provide details of his conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday but remarked: "I don't want them going in, because I think it would blow it. Might help it actually, but it also could blow it."

A U.S. official stated there was no U.S. involvement in the alleged Israeli strikes on Iran.

On Wednesday, the United States began withdrawing embassy staff from Iraq, which has long been a proxy conflict zone with Iran. Israel, heavily reliant on U.S. military and diplomatic support, views the clerical-led state in Tehran as an existential threat and attacked Iranian air defenses last year.

Netanyahu has vowed to show no restraint since the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Tehran-backed Hamas, which triggered a massive Israeli offensive in Gaza.

The United States and other Western nations, along with Israel, have repeatedly accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, a pursuit it has consistently denied. Israel has again called on other countries to take action after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) accused Iran on Wednesday of not complying with its obligations.
