Former South Korean President Yoon Faces Re-Arrest Over Coup Allegations

3 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol complied with a summons from the special prosecutor on Saturday, June 28, 2025. According to Channel News Asia, Yoon is facing the threat of re-arrest as the investigation into his alleged attempt to impose military law last December intensifies.

Through his legal representative, Yoon objected to being summoned under public scrutiny, calling the move a violation of his rights and an attempt to humiliate him.

His lawyer said Yoon would cooperate with the investigation on Saturday and present his side of the story. The legal team described the probe as politically driven and based on falsehoods and distortions.

Yoon did not respond to reporters’ questions upon arriving at the special prosecutor's office.

The December attempt to declare martial law shocked many in South Korea, a nation that takes pride in its democratic progress since emerging from military rule in the 1980s.

Yoon was removed from office in April after the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment by parliament.

The special prosecutor previously sought a warrant for Yoon's arrest after he failed to respond to multiple court summons. However, the court rejected the request earlier this week, noting Yoon’s willingness to cooperate.

Appointed in early June, the special prosecutor has formed a team of more than 200 prosecutors and investigators to handle the case. Yoon, who served as chief prosecutor before being elected president in 2022, is now on trial over his actions in early December.

He was initially arrested in January for resisting armed authorities executing a court order but was released after 52 days due to legal technicalities.
