Gerindra Chief Warns Prabowo's Ministers Against Being a "Burden"

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahmad Muzani, the general secretary of the Gerindra Party, warned members of the Red and White cabinet against becoming a burden to President Prabowo Subianto. This warning comes in the wake of controversy-inducing decisions taken by Prabowo's ministers in recent months. 

Muzani said the cabinet ministers must formulate and develop mature policies to avoid direct intervention by the head of state. 

"I think the president's aides should run more comprehensive and in-depth studies (before making decisions), so they don't become a burden to the president," said Muzani at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

According to the Gerindra chief, Prabowo had to step in and resolve issues caused by his aides, including the nickel mining in Raja Ampat, Papua, and the dispute over islands between Aceh and North Sumatra.

Such issues, he said, should be resolved at the ministry level without involving the president's intervention. He reiterated the need for ministers to apply better problem management.

"Whether it's island disputes or other issues, the president must be burdened with more strategic, comprehensive, and meaningful problems for the interests and growth of the Indonesian people," said Muzani.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo intervened to resolve the ownership dispute of four islands between the Aceh Provincial Government and North Sumatra when the political situation in Aceh heated up. Prabowo decided that the four islands consisting of Panjang, Pulau, Mangkir Gadang, and Mangkir Ketek islands belonged to Aceh.

Prabowo also revoked the licenses of four nickel mining companies operating in Raja Ampat Regency after sparking public criticism. "At the President's direction, the government will revoke mining permits for four companies in Raja Ampat," said State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
