TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Representatives of Iran-backed groups Hezbollah and Hamas attended the funeral ceremony of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Saturday, July 4, 2026. As reported by Arab News, delegations from both groups also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the last tribute procession for Khamenei.
Thousands of people crowded the religious complex of Grand Mosalla in the Iranian capital to pay their final respects to Khamenei.
Having led Iran for almost four decades since 1989, Khamenei held the highest authority in determining the country's strategic policies. Most foreign officials and honored guests had already conveyed their condolences on Friday, July 3, 2026.
Khamenei, along with several members of his family and high-ranking Iranian officials, was killed in a US and Israeli attack on February 28. The attack then triggered widespread warfare in the Middle East region.
Hezbollah and Hamas Send Delegations
According to Mehr News Agency, Hezbollah sent a delegation led by senior official and former Lebanese Minister Mohammed Fneish.
The delegation also included members of parliament and senior Hezbollah officials. Meanwhile, as stated by Hezbollah to the Lebanese media, the delegation also brought the families of the group's deceased and injured members.
The delegation was directly sent by Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem to attend Khamenei's funeral procession.
In his meeting with Abbas Araghchi, Fneish conveyed Qassem's condolences to the leader, government, and people of Iran for the killing of Khamenei, his family members, military commanders, officials, and civilians.
Araghchi expressed gratitude for Qassem's message of condolences, while emphasizing Iran's support of the groups referred to as the resistance axis.
Iran Affirms Support for Lebanon
Regarding the situation in Lebanon, Araghchi stated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran is seriously pursuing the demand for an end to the war in Lebanon and an end to the occupation under Article 1 of the memorandum of understanding on ending the imposed war."
Meanwhile, Hamas stated that its delegation was led by Political Bureau Chair Mohammed Darwish. The delegation also included several members of Hamas's political bureau, including Bassem Naim.
In addition to Hezbollah and Hamas, the funeral ceremony was also attended by the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, Ziyad Al-Nakhalah, as well as senior members of the Houthi group in Yemen, Dhaif Allah Al-Shami.
