How Long Can CATL's Sodium-Ion Energy Storage Last?

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Giant battery manufacturer, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has launched a long-lasting energy storage system, Tener Sodium-Ion, at a product launch event in Munich, Germany. This large-scale energy storage system differs from conventional batteries in that it stores energy in multiple forms.

This energy system has a modular design and a massive storage capacity of over 30 megawatt hours (MWh). Since each modular unit weighs less than 42 tons, users only need 34 modules to build an energy storage center with a total capacity of 1 GWh.

Quoting a review from Car News China on June 22, 2026, precisely on the day of the product launch, CATL's new product brings some key advancements. First, it has a much longer lifespan than similar products. Tener Sodium-Ion can be recharged up to 15,000 times at room temperature and can last for 25-30 years before its battery performance drops to 70 percent.

Thanks to special technology, this battery maintains optimal performance, with a capacity above 92 percent, even when frozen at minus 20 degrees Celsius. During the launch, CATL promoted the safety features of this energy storage system, which is designed to prevent explosions. This energy storage product can withstand up to 40 percent more physical pressure and reduce the production of fire-triggering gas by 35 percent. When exposed to a thermal short circuit, its temperature remains at 200 degrees Celsius. This condition is 60 percent safer than that of ordinary lithium batteries.

Due to its top ventilation design and smart liquid cooling system, the electricity consumed to power this product's internal system is very efficient, at only 1 percent, half the industry average which is usually wasteful at 2 percent. With a noise level of 65 decibels, CATL's new system is also not noisy.

So far, CATL has built a complete supply chain for sodium-ion batteries, including mass production capability for anode and cathode materials. The company is expanding its production capacity by building a 40-gigawatt-hour (GWh) facility in Fuding City and plans to add 160 GWh of capacity in Jining.

This product is likely to enter the domestic Chinese market starting in September 2026, with a target delivery of 1 GWh by the end of the year. After that, a global launch is planned for 2027.
