TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Rod Brazier welcomed the strengthening of energy supply cooperation between Indonesia and Australia amid the impact of the crisis in the Middle East which has affected global supply chains.
According to Brazier, the relationship between the two countries shows the importance of strategic partnerships in maintaining energy security amidst global uncertainty.
"As disruptions in the Middle East impact global supply chains, Indonesia and Australia are supporting each other by increasing Indonesian urea exports to Australia and increasing Australian LPG supplies to Indonesia," Brazier said in a press release from the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by ANTARA.
In recent months, Australia has increased its supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to Indonesia to help cover supply shortages caused by energy distribution disruptions from the Middle East.
This situation is related to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has impacted the global energy supply chain. The closure of this strategic shipping lane has disrupted the supply of LPG to various countries.
Throughout 2026, the number of Australian LPG cargoes shipped to Indonesia will increase at least threefold compared to 2025. According to a statement from the Australian Embassy, the additional shipment helps Indonesia meet its LPG needs during a crucial period.
On the other hand, the Head of the Center for Asia Pacific and Africa Regional Policy Strategy at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vahd Nabyl Achmad Mulachela, assessed that the cooperation reflects the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.
"This demonstrates how the two countries can work together to strengthen energy security, increase supply chain resilience, and promote shared economic interests," he said.
The additional LPG supply comes from the Ichthys Project operated by INPEX and located in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
The energy project also reflects the close collaboration between Indonesia and Australia. The project's key infrastructure is being manufactured in Batam, demonstrating the strong linkages between Australia's offshore resources sector and Indonesia's manufacturing industry.
