Indonesia Condemns Israel's Seizure of Gaza-Bound Aid Ship in International Waters

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono strongly condemned Israel's interception of the Madleen ship, which was carrying aid for Gaza. He denounced Israel's action in halting the aid shipment in international waters.

"I strongly condemn the interception of the Madleen ship by Israel in international waters while delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza," said Sugiono in the ministry's X account, Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Sugiono asserted that Israel's actions once again demonstrated its blatant disregard for international law. He further described the incident involving the Madleen ship as a severe blow to the suffering people of Gaza.

"Israel's blockade, on land and at sea, is a form of collective punishment that exacerbates the risk of mass starvation," he declared.

Furthermore, Sugiono explained that based on international law and the International Criminal Court's (ICC) mandate, Israel is obligated to ensure the continuous and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid and to guarantee the safety of humanitarian workers.

He also expressed appreciation for international efforts to open maritime corridors. "However, it should not divert attention from the urgent need for aid delivery through land routes," he emphasized.

In various international forums, Sugiono has consistently advocated for the opening of all aid routes to Gaza as a critical necessity.

At the upcoming Palestine Summit in New York, Sugiono intends to once again urge the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), to take firm action. He will request the UNSC to protect civilians and adopt a resolution to end the blockade and ensure unrestricted humanitarian access.

The Madleen ship's mission to deliver aid to Gaza was ultimately halted. Israeli forces intercepted the vessel early Monday morning as it approached the Gaza Coast. This ship's journey has garnered international media attention since its departure from Catania, Italy, on June 1, 2025. Israel had previously vowed to stop the ship.

According to Al Jazeera, speculation had circulated regarding how Israel would respond to the ship approaching the Gaza Coast, given its history of forceful actions against aid ships bound for the Gaza Strip.

The Madleen ship is part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an international alliance comprising activists and groups dedicated to opposing the maritime blockade of Gaza. Despite Israel's numerous attempts to intervene, this coalition continues to conduct voyages aimed at providing humanitarian assistance and drawing attention to the severe humanitarian situation in the blockaded area.
