TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The subsidiary of Indonesian railway company KAI, PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI), is seeking to procure 30 trainsets by 2027. "Some for replacement, some for capacity expansion," said Vice President Corporate Secretary of KCI, Karina Amanda, in Central Jakarta on Monday, January 26, 2026.
Karina explained that KCI will add trainsets after 2027, carried out along with trainset replacement that kicks off this year, in accordance with the mandate of President Prabowo Subianto. In November 2025, the head of state announced an injection of Rp5 trillion for KAI to procure 30 train cars.
Meanwhile, President Director of PT KCI Mochamad Purnomosidi said the numbers of train fleets that must be replaced after exceeding their productivity period remain under discussion. But he estimated it to be more than 30 units.
KCI, he said, is reviewing the physical condition of the trains to determine which ones require replacement. Nonetheless, he assured that safety aspects for train users will be prioritized.
Purnomo has yet to clarify the funding source for these dozens of trainsets, but said KCI is now working to complete the administrative procurement requirements and is awaiting financing instructions.
Apart from the procurement project, KCI announced that this year it will replace 12 old trainsets with locomotive units produced by PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA). Additionally, KCI has also replaced four old trainsets with INKA's production, bringing a total of 16 trainsets to be replaced this year.
These trainsets are limited to Bogor and Cikarang routes, as they are able to implement 12 carriages in a single trainset, or SF12.
He also called for the Ministry of Transportation to ramp up the electric power capacity on the Rangkasbitung route to support SF12, allowing for the transport of more passengers.
Purnomo targets 12 new replacement trains to gradually arrive in Jakarta and start operating by June. He emphasized that there should not be any disruptions during the testing process, since PT INKA would have to repeat the tests.
