Indonesia's Tourism Ministry Initiates Audit and Retraining After Falling Hiker Incident at Mount Rinjani

7 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism (Kemenpar) has once again emphasized the importance of adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in extreme tourism activities. This reminder comes after the incident of Juliana Marins, a hiker from Brazil, who fell of a cliff at Mount Rinjani, Rinjani National Park, West Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday, June 21, 2025. "This incident reminds us that every extreme tourist destination carries serious risks," said Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana in an official statement on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

Widiyanti also expressed condolences for the tragic event. She emphasized the importance of compliance with SOP, especially at Mount Rinjani, in accordance with the provisions in the Decree of the Head of Rinjani National Park Number 19 of 2022. "We want to emphasize the strict obligation to adhere to the established SOP. Compliance with this procedure is not just a formality, but it is the main defense in minimizing fatal incidents," she said.

The Ministry of Tourism is requesting the extreme tourism industry and operators to take three concrete steps. First, conducting comprehensive supervision and audits of all operators and guides to ensure official certification. Second, organizing mandatory retraining for guides and porters, including safety techniques, emergency evacuations, and crisis communication. "The Ministry of Tourism continues to collaborate across ministries/agencies to ensure the effectiveness of SOP in the field," said Widiyanti.

Third, the ministry is promoting education for tourists, especially foreign tourists. Education includes the importance of using official operators, the completeness of safety equipment, and risk information before engaging in extreme activities. According to Widiyanti, the safety of tourists is a shared responsibility. This incident is seen as a momentum to enforce extreme tourism SOPs genuinely and comprehensively to prevent similar tragedies.

Juliana Marins fell while hiking Mount Rinjani on Saturday, June 21, 2025. After a four-day search, her body was found at a depth of about 600 meters on Tuesday, June 24. Evacuation could only be carried out the following day due to extreme terrain and bad weather. The Ministry of Tourism appreciates all parties involved in the evacuation process, especially the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the management of Rinjani National Park, and the volunteers.
