TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian U-17 women's national team suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to the host Myanmar in the final match of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 Group C qualifiers at Thuwunna Stadium, Yangon, Myanmar, on Friday, October 17, 2025. This loss resulted in Indonesia's failure to qualify for the final round of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026, which will be held in China next year.
Indonesia, which won 2-0 in the opening match, did not perform well in the first half. As the host, Myanmar dominated the game. They launched several attacks, but for the first 45 minutes, they failed to break through Indonesia's defense.
Just before the end of the first half, Myanmar took the lead through Shin Thant Phyu Sin Pyone's goal.
Indonesia's failure to qualify for the final round was prompted by finishing in second with three points behind Myanmar at the top of the standings. Myanmar is one of the 12 teams to qualify for the final round.
The other team that qualified is the host, China. There are also three teams that qualified without going through the qualifiers: North Korea, Japan, and South Korea, as they were the top three in the previous edition. From Southeast Asia, the qualifying teams are the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.
Coach's Comment on the Indonesian U-17 Women's National Team
The coach of the Indonesian U-17 women's national team, Timo Scheunemann, explained that the loss to Myanmar was because 10 out of 11 players did not perform at their best on the field.
"A very heavy defeat, very heavy. If you have played football before, the heaviest defeat is when you should win, but you end up losing," said Timo after the match on Friday.
"This is a game where we should have won if we played at our best. But 10 out of 11 players did not play well, 10 out of 11 players played poorly so we couldn't get a good result," he said.
Scheunemann mentioned that only one player performed well. "Only the goalkeeper played as normally as possible. And the goal was not her fault. It was a corner kick goal, a good goal," said the 51-year-old coach.
According to Timo, this result is disappointing because his team wanted to play in China to gain valuable experience.
"The only thing you can do is criticize yourself and not blame others. And admit that you didn't play well so that you don't make excuses. That's the only way to move forward and improve," Timo added.
