TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Directorate General of Customs and Excise has opened the possibility of distributing confiscated illegal imported clothing to disaster victims in Sumatra.
“That could be one of the options,” said Nirwala Dwi Heryanto, Director of Customs Communication and Guidance, at the Customs office in East Jakarta on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
Nirwala explained that the option is allowed under regulations governing the handling of seized illegal goods. According to him, there are three possible outcomes for such items: destruction, donation for specific purposes, or auction.
“It will be up to the government to decide. Our colleagues at the Directorate General of State Assets will make the final determination,” he said.
Nirwala delivered the statement after a press conference on the Customs and Excise Office’s recent efforts to intercept illegal garment distribution. He said officers carried out the operations at different times and locations.
Seizure of Two Trucks on the Palembang-Lampung Toll Road
The first operation involved the interception of two trucks loaded with ballpress garment bundles on the Palembang-Lampung toll road on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
Customs officials foiled the shipment of illegally imported garments, packed in ballpress bundles, which were being transported in the two trucks at Kilometer 116 of the highway.
The operation stemmed from public information received by Customs’ Directorate of Enforcement and Investigation about trucks carrying suspected illegal clothing from Jambi to Jakarta. During surveillance, officers found the two trucks parked at a rest area at KM 116.
Initial checks revealed that the trucks contained newly manufactured garments packed in ballpress bundles bearing brand labels and country-of-origin tags such as “Made in China” and “Made in Bangladesh.”
According to Nirwala, the truck drivers said they were merely instructed to transport the vehicles from Suban, Jambi, to Jakarta.
Customs also learned that the illegal goods had originated from Medan based on the delivery documents carried by the drivers. Both drivers admitted they had received the trucks already fully loaded and equipped with the necessary paperwork.
Nirwala added that transporting illegal goods via land routes is a recurring smuggling method.
Seizure of Three Containers from KM Indah Costa
A week after the first operation, Customs intercepted three containers of illegal goods transported by the cargo vessel KM Indah Costa. Of the three containers, two held illegally imported ready-made garments, while the third contained four cigarette-making machines.
Nirwala said Customs is still investigating the countries of origin of the seized items. He added that although the vessel had arrived at Kijang Port in the Riau Islands, the enforcement action was carried out at Sunda Kelapa Port in Jakarta.
