Iran Claims Oil Tanker Passed Hormuz Despite US Blockade

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A massive Iranian oil tanker carrying crude oil is reported to have entered the country’s waters after passing through the Strait of Hormuz despite threats of a blockade from the United States (US).

The Iranian news agency Fars, as reported by Anadolu, stated on Wednesday that the supertanker—capable of carrying approximately 2 million barrels of crude oil—sailed through international waters and the Strait of Hormuz with its tracking system active and without any attempts at concealment.

There has been no comment from US authorities regarding the report.

Previously, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that US forces had “completely halted” maritime trade to and from Iran.

CENTCOM said the blockade applies to all vessels from any country transiting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

However, CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said that “CENTCOM forces will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian port.”

Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted after Washington imposed a blockade on Iranian ports following the failure of US-Iran talks in Pakistan this weekend.

The Strait of Hormuz, which typically handles a significant portion of global seaborne oil flows, remains at the center of the latest energy crisis triggered by the U.S.-Israel war against Iran that began on February 28. The attack killed the then-supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and 3,000 other Iranians.

In response, Tehran launched missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.
