TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia remains open to travelers despite a volcanic eruption that has disrupted flights and temporarily closed several airports, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded. Travelers planning trips to the country are advised to monitor airport and flight updates before departure.
As reported by Time Out, the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau on Saturday sent volcanic ash across the region, grounding around 2,000 flights and affecting about 270,000 passengers. The volcano is located about 150 kilometers from Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, which attracts millions of visitors each year.
What Is the Latest Travel Advice for Indonesia?
It is currently considered safe to travel to Indonesia, with measures in place to address the effects of the eruption. Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was expected to reopen at 6 p.m. Monday, while an airport in South Sumatra had already resumed operations.
There is currently no government advice against traveling to Indonesia once airports reopen. However, travelers should expect possible delays and cancellations as volcanic ash continues to affect flight routes.
The UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised travelers to take precautions against poor air quality caused by volcanic ash. Volcanic ash plumes and pollutants can affect air quality and health, while a properly fitted face mask may provide some protection from airborne particles.
Travelers can also reduce their exposure to hazardous gases by staying indoors and keeping doors and windows closed. Masks are available in Indonesia, although travelers may choose to bring their own.
What Is the Latest Government Travel Advice?
The UK government’s FCDO travel advice for Indonesia has been updated following the eruption. It said Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Halim Airport in Jakarta were temporarily closed because of volcanic ash clouds from Mount Anak Krakatau on September 5.
Both airports have since reopened, but flight disruptions continue, with many services cancelled or delayed.
Travelers with upcoming flights are advised to check directly with their airline or travel provider for the latest information about their flight status before heading to the airport.
Can Travelers Get a Refund if They Cancel Their Trip?
Because the UK government has not advised against travel to Indonesia, travelers who decide to cancel or postpone their trips will need to contact their travel provider directly to discuss their options.
Travel companies are not generally obligated to provide refunds solely because travelers choose to cancel when there is no government advice against traveling. Refund or rescheduling options may depend on the individual provider’s terms and the circumstances affecting the trip.
Travelers should therefore check with their airline, hotel, tour operator or other travel provider before making cancellation arrangements.
