TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel’s Health Ministry on Sunday, June 21, reported a second suspected Ebola case involving a citizen who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as laboratory tests remained underway, as reported by Antara.
The individual, who returned to Israel from the DRC two days earlier, sought medical treatment after developing symptoms including fever, headache, and diarrhea.
The patient was transferred to Sheba Tel Hashomer Medical Center outside Tel Aviv, a referral hospital for handling suspected cases of dangerous infectious diseases.
The ministry stressed that Ebola infection had not been confirmed and that test results were expected in the coming days.
Authorities are also conducting an epidemiological investigation to identify contacts and assess possible links between the two suspected cases. Contact tracing efforts are ongoing, while people who have not been contacted by the ministry are not required to take any action at this stage.
The latest announcement came two days after Israel reported its first suspected Ebola case involving another man who had recently traveled to the DRC, according to The Times of Israel. The man was tested at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, and test results had not yet been released as of Sunday.
The Health Ministry reminded the public that Ebola is not transmitted through the air and spreads through direct contact with an infected person showing symptoms or through exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or secretions.
Israel’s health authorities have distributed personal protective equipment to medical centers and established early detection mechanisms for travelers returning from affected regions. A laboratory system for identifying Ebola infections has also been set up.
The ministry urged the public to avoid nonessential travel to areas with active Ebola transmission, particularly the DRC and Uganda. Travelers visiting those regions are advised to seek guidance from travel clinics beforehand.
In May, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Ebola outbreaks in the DRC and Uganda a health emergency due to the risk of international spread. WHO said the risk of transmission in the region remains high.
The current outbreak has been reported as one of the worst Ebola outbreaks at this stage, with more than 200 deaths recorded in its first month and tens of thousands of suspected contacts identified, according to Africa’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
