Japan Enforces TB Screening for Vietnamese Citizens; Indonesia Is Next in Line

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Japanese government has started implementing mandatory tuberculosis (TB) screening for Vietnamese citizens planning to stay in Japan for more than three months, starting from Monday, September 1, 2025.

As reported by Kyodo and cited by Antara, the previous policy had already been applied to citizens of Nepal and the Philippines in response to an increasing number of foreign nationals being diagnosed with the contagious disease.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare of Japan, the list of countries subject to this requirement will be expanded to include China, Indonesia, and Myanmar in the future. This system was first applied to Nepal and the Philippines last June.

Foreign nationals who intend to stay in Japan for more than three months are generally required to undergo screening at medical facilities designated by the Japanese government. They must also provide evidence that they are not infected with TB when applying for a visa.

Although TB is curable and preventable, as many as 10,096 people were diagnosed with the disease in Japan in 2023. Among them, 1,619 were foreign-born, accounting for approximately 16 percent of the total cases. This ratio continues to increase each year, according to the ministry.

According to the Ministry of Health of Japan, about 80 percent of TB cases among foreign-born individuals in Japan are from six countries that have been or will be subject to pre-arrival screening policies.

TB screening before entering a country has also been implemented in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
