'KPop Demon Hunters' Becomes Netflix's Most Popular Movie

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The animated film KPop Demon Hunters has officially become the most popular film in Netflix's history, reaching 236 million views, surpassing the previous record set by Red Notice (2021). This achievement was announced by Netflix on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, local time.

Reported by Soompi, this accomplishment is particularly remarkable, as the film was released on June 20, 2025. It took just over two months to surpass all other titles in the Netflix catalog.

The film now tops the list of the five most-watched films on Netflix, surpassing Red Notice, Carry-On, Don't Look Up, and The Adam Project. Tudum Netflix also added that the film not only holds the title of the most-watched original Netflix animated film but also is the most popular English-language film on Netflix.

Global Reception and Production Details

According to Variety, KPop Demon Hunters even received a limited theater release last weekend. Although Netflix did not disclose the film's box office revenue, several sources mentioned that it topped the box office with earnings between US$18 and US$20 million. Tudum also noted that the Sing-Along version of the film was screened on August 23-24, 2025, in over 1,000 theaters in North America, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, all of which were sold out, making it the number one film at the weekend box office.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film features voice actors such as Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo Seop, May Hong, Ji Young Yoo, Lee Byung Hun, Daniel Dae Kim, and Ken Jeong. It tells the story of a K-pop girl group that performs at stadiums during the day but secretly hunts demons at night to protect their fans. They must face a significant threat from a rival boy group that is actually made up of demons.

Aside from its success in terms of viewership, the film's accompanying soundtrack also made history on the Billboard charts. The album became the first soundtrack to simultaneously place four songs in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Overall, it secured the No. 2 position on the Billboard 200, with over three billion global streams. The song Golden even claimed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and Global 200.

The song Takedown (TWICE Version) featuring Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung from TWICE also garnered attention. Maggie Kang, one of the film's directors, said that TWICE's involvement proves that the film successfully delivered an authentic K-pop vibe. Critics also responded positively, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a score of 97 percent (Certified Fresh) and audiences rating it 91 percent fresh.
