TEMPO.CO, Garut - Four residents of Kiararambai, Girimukti Village, Cisewu District, Garut Regency, West Java, were buried and killed when a landslide drove soil inside their residence.
"All the victims were successfully evacuated last night around 11:30 p.m. local time," said Acting Sub-district Head of Cisewu, Jajang Juhara, to Tempo, Thursday, June 26, 2025.
The four people are Mar'ah, 70 years old; Mardi, 38 years old; Linda, 35 years old; and Fajar, 3 years old.
The tragic landslide occurred on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, around 7:00 p.m.
According to Jajang, the semi-permanent house belonging to the victims was hit by a landslide from a cliff on the village roadside, triggered by rainwater that has poured since midday.
Based on the village head's report, Jajang said, this overflowing water was caused by a flash flood originating from one of the mountains near the residents' village. As a result, the roadside ditches overflowed and were unable to contain the water.
"The floods carried the remains of fallen trees. There might have been logging on the mountain," said Jajang.
Currently, the regional disaster management team is on their way to the location. This team consists of the Regional Disaster Management Agency, the Social Service, and the Housing and Settlement Agency. The South Garut village is located 8 kilometers from the subdistrict office.
Cisewu Sector Police Chief Inspector Asep Pujaeri said that the joint team of TNI/Polri, local government, and volunteers are currently clearing the landslide materials. The evacuation process is carried out with caution, considering the unstable terrain.
"We urge the public to remain vigilant, especially during heavy rain. Coordination with the village government, BPBD, and volunteers is ongoing to anticipate the potential for subsequent disasters," said Asep.
