Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League champions qualified after defeating the United States club, Inter Miami, with a score of 4-0 in the last 16 match, Sunday night WIB, June 29, 2025.
This was a special match for Lionel Messi. The Inter Miami captain faced the club he had strengthened in 2021-2023. However, he and his teammates did not perform optimally and failed to score a goal.
PSG appeared dominant in the match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, United States. They scored goals in the first half through Joao Neves (6', 39'), Tomas Aviles' own goal (44') and Achraf Hakimi (45+3').
PSG immediately took control from the start with ball possession. Joao Neves opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a header at the far post after receiving Vitinha's free kick.
PSG managed to double their score in the 16th minute through Fabian Ruiz, but it was disallowed for being offside.
The French club coached by Luis Enrique was only able to score their second goal in the 39th minute, again through Joao Neves who utilized a pass from Fabian Ruiz. PSG were leading 2-0.
PSG increased their lead to 3-0 towards the end of the first half through an own goal by Inter Miami defender Tomas Aviles, who tried to clear a cross from Desire Doue.
At the end of the first half, precisely in the 45+3 minute, PSG scored their fourth goal through Achraf Hakimi. Hakimi failed in his first attempt because his shot from close range hit the crossbar and the rebound was immediately pounced on by the Moroccan defender into a goal. The score of 4-0 lasted until halftime.
Entering the second half, PSG eased the pressure. Coach Luis Enrique brought in names from the bench in order to maintain the physical condition of his players.
Lucas Beraldo, Warren Zaire-Emery, Ousmane Dembele, Lucas Hernandez and Lee Kang-in came on after the break to replace Marquinhos, Fabian Ruiz, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi.
Despite being filled with reserve players, Inter Miami struggled to create chances in the PSG penalty box.
Inter Miami's first chance came in the 63rd minute through Messi who fired a shot at goal and went straight to PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma's catch.
Messi had another chance in the 79th minute when he headed Jordi Alba's cross, which was also blocked by Donnarumma.
Until the end of the match, no additional goals were scored. PSG secured a place in the quarter-finals to face Bayern Munich who beat Flamengo 4-2.
