TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, has responded to Mexico's new policy of imposing a 50 percent import tariff, asserting that the measure will not impact Indonesia.
According to Airlangga, Indonesia does not have a substantial export-import relationship with Mexico. "It's about the goods entering Mexico, so it doesn't affect Indonesia," Airlangga told reporters at the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Jakarta on Friday, December 12, 2025.
The Minister also confirmed that the Indonesian government currently has no plans to negotiate with the Mexican government regarding the trade tariffs. Conversely, the Indonesian government is scheduled to travel to the United States next week to discuss a trade agreement, which Airlangga hopes can be finalized by the end of this year.
Quoting Antara, the Mexican Senate approved a bill raising tariffs by 50 percent on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. This tariff increase will affect countries that do not hold a free trade agreement (FTA) with Mexico, including China, Thailand, India, South Korea, and Indonesia.
The policy is slated to take effect on January 1, impacting more than 1,400 product lines. These lines include major categories such as cars, vehicle parts, textiles, clothing, steel, plastics, footwear, and household appliances.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the policy, stating that it was implemented to support domestic production, amid escalating trade relations and pressure from the United States.
