Natural Disasters Claim 84 Lives in Colombia, Pakistan, and Sudan

9 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Throughout the past week, there have been reports of mourning from various parts of the world. Various natural disasters and accidents have claimed at least 84 lives. There were landslides in Colombia, widespread flooding in Pakistan, and a gold mine accident in Sudan.

Here is the summary, as quoted from Antara and Anadolu:

Landslide in Colombia, 22 Dead

A landslide that hit the Antioquia region of Colombia due to heavy rains on June 24 has killed 22 people until June 29. Eight people are still reported missing in the disaster, according to local authorities.

According to a statement from the Antioquia governor's office, several new victims have been found in the areas of Bello and Altos de Oriente in Medellin.

Search and rescue efforts continue involving 391 personnel to find other bodies that may still be buried under the ground.

Amid the search efforts, local authorities in their statement reminded that many houses are built on sloping terrain prone to landslides, classifying these residential buildings as high-risk.

The heavy rains since March have caused natural disasters that have claimed lives and property damage in various regions of Colombia.

The landslide occurred on June 24 in the mountainous area of Bello, Medellin, the second largest city in Colombia, after heavy rains caused the nearby river to overflow. Situated in the western Andes, Antioquia often experiences landslides during the rainy season.

Flooding in Pakistan, 12 Dead

Flash floods occurred near the city of Mingora in the Swat district, part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, on Friday, June 27, 2025. The death toll from this incident has reached 12 people.

The number of casualties was confirmed after Pakistani authorities found 4 more bodies from the Swat River on Sunday. Search operations are still ongoing for one missing person. "So far, the 1122 rescue team has found four bodies and one person is still missing," said the team's spokesperson, Bilal Ahmed Faizi.

The flash floods swept away at least 16 people, while three were rescued. Authorities also evacuated around 80 tourists stranded from various locations along the river.

This disaster occurred as Pakistan faced a deadly start to the rainy season. At least 22 people died in weather-related accidents across the country during the past week. Flash floods and heavy rains often occur in Pakistan during the rainy season, causing casualties and extensive damage, especially in the northern and northwest regions.

Gold Mine Collapse in Sudan, 50 Dead

At least 50 people died after a gold mine collapsed in northeastern Sudan. The accident occurred on Saturday, June 28, in the Howaid Desert in the Nile River State, according to the local newspaper Alrakoba.

Eyewitnesses reported a large volume of sand and rocks collapsing on the miners working at the illegal mining site. Rescue efforts were hampered by the lack of heavy machinery and professional rescue teams.

A similar collapse occurred at the same location two months ago, causing several miners to be injured. This tragedy has renewed criticism of weak government oversight and poor infrastructure at mining sites, where thousands of people work in hazardous conditions without formal regulation or safety standards.
