No Indonesians Among Air India 171 Crash Victims, Says Foreign Affairs Ministry

22 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has confirmed that no Indonesian citizens were among the victims of the Air India 171 plane crash. The aircraft crashed during takeoff from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, en route to London, England, resulting in the deaths of 231 passengers and 10 crew members on board.

According to a report from the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Mumbai, Judha stated that no Indonesian citizens were listed as passengers on the ill-fated flight. "Based on the manifest obtained by KJRI Mumbai, there were no Indonesian citizens on board," Judha said in a written statement issued on Thursday night, June 12, 2025.

While officials initially reported no survivors from the crash, they later confirmed that one man survived and is currently receiving hospital treatment. The aircraft crashed into buildings, leading to fears of numerous ground casualties. Air India stated that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner departed at 1:38 p.m. local time with 242 people aboard, including 169 Indians, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian national.

As reported by India Today, the airline confirmed in a post on X that only one of the 242 passengers and crew on board had miraculously survived the crash. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national (40), was in seat 11A, directly behind an emergency exit.

He was returning to the UK with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh (45), after a family visit to India. Still clutching his boarding pass, Ramesh recounted the terrifying moments after the crash to Hindustan Times. "When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me," he said.

Ramesh is currently hospitalized at Civil Hospital, Asarwa, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, receiving treatment for "impact injuries" to his chest, eyes, and feet.

Earlier, local police reported that over 200 bodies had been transported to Ahmedabad hospitals. Separately, the rescue team indicated they had recovered between 30 and 35 bodies from the crash site.

Images from the crash site, shared on X by the central Indian police, showed the plane's tail visible against the wall of a building. Other images depicted rescue teams standing beside the charred wreckage and fallen trees near a residential complex.

Given that the plane impacted buildings, there were concerns regarding a high number of ground casualties.
