TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI is becoming more ambitious in developing artificial intelligence (AI) innovation. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, stated that the company is currently developing hardware for AI programs that were previously only available through the ChatGPT software.
He mentioned that the prototype of the AI device has been completed, with Jony Ive involved as the technology designer. Jony Ive's involvement in this new project is noteworthy as he is the former head of design at Apple who contributed to the creation of the iPhone and iPod.
During a discussion at the Emerson Collective Demo Day two weeks ago, Jony Ive and Sam Altman revealed that the device is expected to be launched in less than two years, around late 2026 or early 2027.
Quoting Gizmochina, it was mentioned that this project is not like a mobile device or smart glasses and follows the concept of calm computing. Leaked information suggests that the device will not have a screen like a typical phone. Its size is predicted to be tiny, similar to an iPod Shuffle, meaning the AI device can be carried in a user's pocket.

Despite its minimalist design, the technology behind this device is claimed to be very advanced. The absence of a screen on this device is not a problem because the interaction will rely entirely on voice commands and AI's ability to understand user instructions.
Furthermore, leaks also revealed that the AI device has a sensitive camera and microphone designed to see and hear the user's surroundings in real-time. It can be said that this innovation is an effort to seamlessly integrate digital assistants into everyday life without visual interference.
Will It Compete with Apple?
OpenAI's commitment to this project is evident from their recruitment maneuvers. The company has reportedly hired dozens of engineers and designers who were former Apple employees, including Tang Tan, a former product design executive at iPhone, and Evans Hankey.
Not only the talent, but its supply chain also has an Apple influence. OpenAI is reported to have teamed up with Chinese manufacturing giants such as Luxshare and Goertek to produce this device. These are the same factories used by Apple to manufacture their products.
OpenAI's innovation in conceptualizing AI into portable hardware certainly looks ambitious on one side. Especially considering the many failures previously faced by similar software companies like OpenAI that are transitioning to hardware products.
However, based on the latest analysis and leaks, if the combination of ChatGPT's intelligence and Jony Ive's aesthetic capabilities succeeds, this device has the potential to become the new standard for personal computing in the post-smartphone era.
