Over 100,000 Visitors Crowd Ragunan Zoo for Islamic New Year Holiday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourists flocked to the Ragunan Zoo during the Islamic New Year holiday and long weekend from Friday to Sunday, June 27-29, 2025. The Head of Public Relations of Ragunan Zoo, Bambang Wahyudi, said the number of visitors reached hundreds of thousands during the holiday period.

"The initial estimates of the total number of visitors reached 134,943 people during the Islamic new year holiday," Bambang said in a brief message on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

During the long weekend period, Bambang mentioned,  Ragunan Zoo received tens of thousands of visitors every day. On Friday, June 27, or during the Islamic New Year, the South Jakartan zoo was visited by 32,587 people.

The number saw a surge the following day. "On Saturday, June 28, 2025, the number of visitors reached 48,137 people," said Bambang.

Ragunan Zoo visitors peaked on Sunday, June 29, the last day of the long weekend, with 54,219 people visiting as of 1:00 p.m. local time.

After the surge of visitors during the holiday, the animals at Ragunan Zoo will have a day off on Monday, June 30. Ragunan provides rest days for the animals every Monday by closing the zoo to the public.

Ragunan Zoo is often crowded with visitors during long holiday periods, but the number of visitors recorded during the Islamic new year remains lower compared to Eid al-Fitr. 

One of the attractions of Ragunan Zoo is its affordable entrance fee. According to the official website of the tourist spot, the entrance fee for adults is Rp4,000 per person, while children are charged Rp3,000 to enter the zoo.

As reported by ragunanzoo.jakarta.go.id, the precursor of Ragunan Zoo was established on September 19, 1864, in Cikini, Batavia. The construction of this zoo was carried out 81 years before Indonesia's independence on August 17, 1945. Ragunan was first built under the name Planten en Dierentuin, managed by the association of flora and fauna lovers in Batavia.
