TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Team Coach of Indonesia Patrick Kluivert believes that his players need to learn a lot from the heavy defeat against Japan in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The match, held at Suita Stadium, Osaka Prefecture, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, ended with a score of 6-0 in favor of the Blue Samurai team.
Kluivert wants to take the defeat from Japan as a valuable lesson to prepare the team as best as possible for the upcoming fourth round of the Asian qualification stage. The fourth round will kick off in October. "We need to learn from this situation. I think this is a very important learning moment. As individuals, as a coach, and as a team. We need to learn from this situation," said Kluivert in a post-match press conference on Tuesday, June 11, 2025.
Daichi Kamada scored two goals in this match. Takefusa Kubo, Ryoya Morishita, Shuto Machino, and Mao Hosoya completed Japan's victory. Not only did they win, Japan was also very dominant. Sofascore noted that they had 71 percent ball possession, released a total of 22 shots, 10 of which were significant chances.
Japan's domination prevented Indonesia from doing anything during the 90-minute match. Joey Pelupessy only possessed the ball 29 percent of the time and did not make a single shot. Indonesia could have suffered more losses if their goalkeeper, Emil Audero, had not made four brilliant saves. "I think they deserve to win," Kluivert commented on Japan's performance.
This is Indonesia's third defeat to Japan since 2024. In those three matches, Indonesia conceded 13 goals and only managed to score one goal through Sandy Walsh as the Garuda team lost 1-3 to the Blue Samurai in the 2023 Asian Cup, last January.
Meanwhile, this is the second defeat for Kluivert out of four matches coaching Indonesia. Unfortunately, these two defeats were heavy losses. Before being defeated by Japan, Indonesia was defeated by Australia 1-5 in Sydney.
"Once again, we respect Japan. They have a lot of quality. We started the game against Japan very well. However, individually, they have a lot of quality, as a team as well. They dominated the game. That's the honest truth. Everyone saw the game. We need to respect that. We need to learn, and that is the most important thing," said the Dutch coach.
