TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division of the Nagan Raya Police Resort relocated and installed Starlink devices in the Alue Waki Village, Darul Makmur District, Aceh, Indonesia, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. The installation was aimed at restoring communication access for the flood-affected communities in Sumatra.
The Head of ICT at Nagan Raya Police Resort, Ipda Saifuddin Amin, stated that Starlink was introduced as a quick solution to the limited internet network that was hindering post-disaster communication. He said, "Internet access is crucial during the recovery period, so that people can stay connected and receive information," in a written statement on Tuesday.
The satellite-based internet network installation was carried out around 09:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Times) and was assisted by the local community at the village's activity center.
Saifuddin hoped that providing this internet service could fulfill the communication needs of the affected communities, ensuring smooth coordination for emergencies, aid distribution, and communication with families.
"With the operation of the Starlink network, the Nagan Raya Police Resort hopes that post-flood recovery can progress more rapidly and that our service to the community remains optimal," added Saifuddin.
Prior to this, the installation of the Starlink internet network had also been carried out by the Ministry of Health. A total of 15 Starlink devices were installed in districts and cities affected by the Sumatra floods.
In Aceh Province itself, there were 9 installed Starlink units, including in Aceh Tamiang (3 units), Aceh Timur (2 units), Langsa City (1 unit), Pidie Jaya (1 unit), and Bener Meriah (1 unit). An additional unit was placed at the Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC) of Aceh Province.
Based on preliminary data, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that there were 40 flood and landslide victims in Sumatra who were found by joint teams on Monday, December 8, 2025. This increased the temporary total death toll to 961 people.
The Head of the Disaster Information and Communication Data Center at BNPB, Abdul Muhari, mentioned that the highest number of victims were found in Aceh Province. "As of December 8, the number of victims in Aceh increased by 23 people, bringing the total to 389," he said in his statement on Monday, December 8, 2025.
The electricity supply in three provinces is still in the process of recovery by PT PLN (Persero). Meanwhile, the internet network in several areas remains difficult to access due to the communication facilities being affected by the disaster.
