TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto views that the United States (US) should be a growth partner in the Indo-Pacific region. According to him, the involvement of the United States can help in building ASEAN.
Prabowo Subianto expressed this statement while attending the 13th ASEAN-United States (US) Summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia, on Sunday, October 26, 2025. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, was in attendance.
"The United States has long been and must continue to be a growth partner and a peace partner in the Indo-Pacific. As a growth partner, the United States' involvement has helped build a stronger and more connected ASEAN," said Prabowo in a statement from the Presidential Secretariat on Sunday.
Prabowo believes that the partnership with the United States has helped strengthen the integration and competitiveness of ASEAN. Additionally, Prabowo stated that the partnership between the United States and ASEAN has created job opportunities for over 625,000 American workers.
"With a strong US partnership, ASEAN has become the world's fifth largest economy, creating job opportunities for over 625,000 American workers through an annual export worth US$122 billion," said Prabowo.
In the geopolitical context, Prabowo emphasized the importance of realizing an open, predictable, and inclusive Indo-Pacific for all countries. The Head of State highlighted the importance of the international community's moral courage in addressing humanitarian crises in Palestine.
"Indonesia appreciates the results of the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit and your leadership, Mr. President, in advancing a credible roadmap towards everlasting peace. Our task now is its implementation, turning words into real actions," said Prabowo.
The President stated Indonesia's commitment to supporting aid and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, including participation in multinational stabilization missions. Indonesia, according to Prabowo, is also prepared to deploy peacekeeping forces in areas that need to be protected and upheld.
"Let us choose to be on the right side of history. Let ASEAN and the US become peace partners. Building lasting peace, fostering constructive cooperation, and strengthening partnerships that bring tangible benefits to our people and the world," said Prabowo.
The 47th ASEAN Summit was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 26-28, 2025. The summit brought together heads of state and government from all ASEAN members, including the newly appointed Prime Minister of Thailand.
The series of meetings leading up to the summit began on October 24, which included ministerial-level meetings. The agenda included an Expanded Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus. The consultation discussed the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) regarding the situation in Myanmar, which covered cessation of hostilities, provision of humanitarian assistance, appointment and visits of special envoys, and inclusive dialogue.
Additionally, on October 25, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting was held. The 47th ASEAN Summit also addressed the South China Sea disputes. Subsequently, ASEAN leaders attended the opening ceremony followed by the signing of the declaration of Timor-Leste's acceptance as the 11th member of ASEAN at the summit's peak.
