Prabowo Says Food Self-Sufficiency Key to Indonesia's Survival in Global Crisis

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto believes that food self-sufficiency is the key to Indonesia's survival as a nation. In the event of an extraordinary global crisis, the Indonesian government already has a food supply for the entire population. "Even if an extraordinary global crisis occurs, we are confident that we have a food supply for the entire Indonesian population," said Prabowo during the inauguration of the operation and management of renewable energy in 15 provinces via a Zoom meeting monitored from the President's Secretariat YouTube channel on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

The head of state stated that Indonesia is heading towards food self-sufficiency and will even become the world's food barn. This claim comes after observing the increased food production this year. "I have set a target for food self-sufficiency in 4 years. It turns out that the results of the past few months show a tremendous increase in production, so we can achieve food self-sufficiency within this year," said Prabowo.

The former Defense Minister mentioned that the rice and corn reserves have reached their highest level in Indonesia's history. Food production will have reached its highest level by the first half of 2025. "In some areas, production has increased by an average of 40-50 percent," he said.

In addition to food security, Prabowo stated that Indonesia has an abundance of renewable energy sources. All the Indonesian government needs to do is manage these resources properly for the people's welfare.

Prabowo was previously scheduled to attend the inauguration of the Operation and Development of Renewable Energy in 15 Provinces and the Increase in Production of 30 barrels of the Banyu Urip Field on Thursday, June 26, 2025. The inauguration ceremony was symbolically carried out at the Blawan Ijen Unit 1 Ijen Geothermal Power Plant in Bondowoso, East Java, on Thursday, June 26, 2026. However, Prabowo did not attend in person. He stated that the weather conditions did not allow his presence, so he only participated in the inauguration via Zoom.
