TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is set to establish a specialized authority dedicated to overseeing the giant sea wall project along Java's northern coast. This dedicated team will be tasked with transforming into reality the long-envisioned construction of the colossal sea barrier, a plan that has been under consideration by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) since 1995.
"I have instructed a team to go on a roadshow, and soon I will establish the Northern Coast Giant Sea Wall Authority," the President announced during the International Conference on Infrastructure (ICI) 2025 at the Jakarta International Convention Center on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
He indicated that his administration intends to commence the long-stalled sea wall project in the near future. This monumental undertaking is projected to span from the coast of Banten to Gresik, East Java, potentially extending over 500 kilometers. "The estimated cost required is US$80 billion," he disclosed.
He estimated that the construction of the sea wall specifically around Jakarta Bay would take 8 to 10 years, with the entire project potentially requiring 15 to 20 years to complete.
Despite the lengthy timeline, Prabowo expressed confidence in the long-term endeavor. "There is an ancient proverb, 'a journey of 1,000 kilometers begins with a single step.' We will soon start," he affirmed.
As an initial phase, the government will prioritize the construction of the giant sea wall along the northern coast from Jakarta to Semarang. This prioritization stems from the immediate threat posed by tidal flooding in these areas, which already impacts residents' lives.
Prabowo also extended an invitation to foreign investors interested in participating in the project. Specifically for the sea wall project on Jakarta's northern coast, he mentioned an estimated budget of US$8-10 billion. However, he emphasized that the government does not intend to wait for external funding. "We will use our own strength," he declared.
