TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto emphasized Indonesia's commitment to pushing ASEAN's steps in resolving various crises in the region, including the situation in Myanmar.
This was conveyed by Prabowo in his statement at the 47th ASEAN Summit retreat held on Sunday, October 26, 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia.
"The crisis around us continues to test our resolve, in our region, and among our friends. The situation in Myanmar remains a deep concern. We are observing the latest developments, including the plans for the elections in December 2025," Prabowo said in a statement from the Presidential Secretariat on Sunday.
Prabowo urged ASEAN to ensure that the principles of democracy and transparency are upheld in Myanmar. The head of state suggested that ASEAN consider sending a team of observers to help ensure accountability in the upcoming elections.
"The Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair should continue to engage all relevant stakeholders, and at the appropriate time, ASEAN could consider sending a team of observers to help ensure transparency and accountability in the democratic process," said Prabowo.
On that occasion, Prabowo also highlighted the limited implementation of the five-point consensus, despite being agreed upon almost 5 years ago. Ahead of the elections in Myanmar, Prabowo emphasized the importance of the five-point consensus remaining the main reference in efforts for peace and stability in Myanmar.
"We must continue to call for a ceasefire to create the necessary space for meaningful dialogue. Indonesia is ready to support the ASEAN Chair in engaging all parties towards a truly inclusive process," said Prabowo.
In addition to the issue of Myanmar, Prabowo expressed concern over the increasing tension between Thailand and Cambodia. He stated that differences not immediately mitigated can disrupt and pose risks to peace in the ASEAN region.
"I appreciate Prime Minister Anwar's leadership in facilitating dialogue and a ceasefire. We urge both sides to resolve their differences with the spirit of ASEAN, as one family," Prabowo said.
The 47th ASEAN Summit will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 26-28, 2025. This summit will bring together heads of state and government from all ASEAN member countries, including the newly inaugurated Prime Minister of Thailand.
Prabowo attended the ASEAN Summit to represent Indonesia in regional discussions and regional diplomacy. "The presence at the level of heads of state, heads of government, so far the information obtained is that all from ASEAN will attend," said the Director-General of ASEAN Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sidharto R. Suryodipuro, in a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Sidharto explained that the series of meetings leading up to the summit will begin on October 24 with a ministerial-level meeting. "The first, on the afternoon of October 24, is the Expanded Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus," he said.
The consultation discussed the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) regarding the situation in Myanmar, which includes the cessation of hostilities, the provision of humanitarian assistance, the appointment and visit of a special envoy, and inclusive dialogue. "So, this is all a path towards the return of stability in Myanmar. In the 5PC, there is no discussion of change," he said.
In addition, on October 25, a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers or the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting will be held.
The 47th ASEAN Summit will also discuss the South China Sea dispute. "The South China Sea and Myanmar remain the main topics of discussion. There will be a special meeting," he added.
Subsequently, ASEAN leaders will attend the opening ceremony followed by the signing of the declaration of Timor-Leste's acceptance as the 11th member of ASEAN at the peak of the summit on Sunday, October 26, 2025. "Previously, at the ministerial level, Timor-Leste submitted an instrument of accession, then at this time with the joint signing of the declaration," said Sidharto.
