Prabowo Urges Campuses to Help Local Govts Tackle Key Issues

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has called on universities across Indonesia to help local governments tackle a range of development challenges, from waste management to environmental planning.

The request was conveyed to Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto. Speaking after a meeting with the president on Monday, May 4, 2026, Brian said Prabowo emphasized the need for stronger involvement of universities in addressing regional needs through research and expertise.

“The President asked about the readiness of departments, study programs, and lecturers who can assist local governments,” Brian said.

He added that Prabowo highlighted the importance of closer collaboration between campuses and regional administrations, particularly in fields such as environmental engineering, architecture, and waste management technology.

“How can local governments be supported by campuses, researchers, and professors in relevant fields, such as architecture for public space design, environmental engineering, and mechanical engineering for waste management,” he said.

As a follow-up, the ministry plans to consolidate universities nationwide to form expert teams that will work alongside local authorities.

“It is expected that every province, city, and district will have a campus-based team assisting local leaders in addressing these issues,” Brian said.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the ministry’s “Impactful Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology” program, which aims to ensure that academic activities and research deliver tangible benefits to society. Prabowo, he said, has called for a more structured approach so that all universities can contribute to regional development.

Beyond local governance support, universities are also expected to play a role in major infrastructure projects, including the Giant Sea Wall planned along Java’s northern coast.

According to Brian, the project will require precise hydrodynamic modeling, adaptive coastal engineering, material innovation, and a comprehensive understanding of coastal communities’ social and economic conditions.
