Pramono Anung Taps Diaspora Support During New York Visit, Explores Sister City Plan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo visited the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in New York during his official trip to the United States. During the visit, Pramono met with members of the Indonesian diaspora, including academics, students, and scholars from various parts of the country.

In a dialogue session, the diaspora raised several requests, particularly regarding Jakarta’s plan to establish a sister city partnership with New York.

According to the Governor’s spokesperson, Cyril Raoul Hakim, also known as Chico Hakim, one of the aspirations conveyed was the need for Jakarta to be more open to collaborative research with students based in New York.

“This includes the visiting scholar scheme and internship collaboration projects that can connect young Indonesian innovators abroad with institutions at home,” Chico said in a written statement on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Pramono also discussed the role of the Indonesia Investment Promotion Center (IIPC) in New York as a platform for strengthening economic diplomacy with Jakarta. Chico noted that the Governor wants the IIPC to act as a bridge between Jakarta-based business players and American investors.

In addition, Pramono received input from the Indonesian Muslim community in New York. “They requested that Jakarta enhance its spiritual and cultural ties with the diaspora, including strengthening cooperation based on values of tolerance and diversity, which are among Indonesia’s core strengths,” Chico added.

Speaking at the event, Pramono emphasized the important role of the Indonesian diaspora in contributing to Jakarta’s development.

“Jakarta cannot be built solely from within. We need contributions from abroad, including from our diaspora,” said Pramono.

He highlighted the advantages that diaspora communities bring, such as access to global knowledge, networks, and emerging technologies. “Such collaboration is essential to transform Jakarta into a modern, inclusive, and resilient city capable of facing future challenges,” said the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician.

Pramono is visiting New York from July 14 to July 20, 2025. He was invited as a speaker at the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) at the United Nations Headquarters. Alongside his UN appearance, he is also exploring the possibility of establishing a sister city partnership with New York City.
