Protesters Still Gather Outside Brimob Headquarters This Morning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As of Friday morning, August 29, 2025, a large crowd was still gathered around the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) Command Headquarters in Kwitang, Central Jakarta. Dozens of people are stationed in front of Brimob headquarters and continue to hurl insults at the police on duty.

"Murderers, murderers, murderers," shouted the protesters, who consist of various elements, ranging from those wearing jackets, Maxim, Grab, and Gojek, to those in plain T-shirts.

Since early in the morning, the crowd started to gather at the Police Mobile Brigade Command Headquarters in Kwitang, Central Jakarta, after an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver named Affan Kurniawan, 21 years old, was killed by a police tactical vehicle in the Pejompongan area on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.

The vehicle continued to drive even though Affan was lying on the ground, and he was later declared dead after being taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.

In addition to shouting insults, the crowd also threw stones and firecrackers. The sound of the explosions echoed along Kramat Kwitang Street.

The police responded to the siege by forming a barricade in front of the main gate of Brimob headquarters. Occasionally, officers could be heard responding to the insults with their own, and some even laughed while calling out to the crowd to come closer.

Previously, the Commander of the Jayakarta Military Regional Command (Pangdam Jaya), Major General Deddy Suryadi, along with dozens of TNI personnel, arrived at Brimob headquarters in Kwitang at around 2:00 AM. Deddy entered the headquarters for about ten minutes and then came out to meet the crowd on the west side.

"I have already conveyed that the police will take responsibility," Deddy told the crowd.

However, the statement was met with shouts from the crowd. Deddy could barely continue speaking because the crowd kept expressing its frustration. The ojol drivers were not satisfied. "We do not believe in law enforcement in Indonesia," they said.
