TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has appointed Nova Arianto as head coach of the U-20 national team, following a recommendation from PSSI Technical Director Alexander Zwiers.
The decision was approved by members of the PSSI Executive Committee and formally announced on Thursday, November 20, 2025.
“Based on the recommendation submitted by Director Alexander, our Exco colleagues have agreed to assign Nova Arianto the responsibility of leading the U-20 men’s national team,” said Sumardji, head of the National Team Body, during a press briefing at the GBK Arena in Senayan, Jakarta.
Alexander explained that Nova was chosen because of his strong grasp of Indonesia’s football landscape and his proven ability to work with young players.
“He understands Indonesian football very well and will be able to handle talents born in 2008 and after,” Alexander said.
“We believe this will make it easier for him to continue developing the U-20 squad. We also see his leadership.”
Nova’s appointment aligns with earlier remarks by PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir, who had said that the former U-17 coach would be promoted after guiding Indonesia’s U-17 team to qualify for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Erick shared the update shortly after Nova returned from accompanying the Young Garuda squad in Qatar.
In a post on his personal Instagram account on November 13, Erick said the federation is now preparing the U-20 team for its next major target.
“We will prepare the U-20 national team to qualify for the 2027 U-20 Asia Cup,” he wrote.
