Rupiah Weakens as US Threat to Expand Blockade to Gulf of Oman

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate weakened on Tuesday by 22 points, or 0.13 percent, closing at Rp17,127 per U.S. dollar, down from Rp17,105 per U.S. dollar the previous day.

According to currency and commodity observer Ibrahim Assuaibi, the rupiah's weakening was triggered by the U.S. threat to extend the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman.

"The U.S. military said on Monday (April 13) that its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would extend eastward to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, while ship tracking data showed two vessels turning back in the strait as the blockade took effect," he said in a written statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, cited Antara.

As reported by Anadolu, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) began blockading the strategic maritime route on Monday, April 13, after negotiations between Washington and Tehran failed to establish a ceasefire.

CENTCOM announced that the blockade would be enforced "indiscriminately" against all vessels calling at Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. They added that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz to ports other than Iran would remain unaffected.

"In response, Iran threatened to target ports in countries bordering the Gulf after the collapse of weekend talks in Islamabad aimed at resolving the crisis," he said.

Conversely, the prospect of a potential U.S.-Iran dialogue aimed at ending the war has alleviated concerns about supply risks resulting from the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

"Sources familiar with the negotiations said dialogue between Iran and the U.S. was still ongoing, while Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed ongoing efforts to defuse tensions," Ibrahim said.

The Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) of Bank Indonesia also weakened today, dropping from Rp17,122 to Rp17,135 per U.S. dollar.
