TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Throughout his political career, Donald Trump has faced widespread opposition from numerous musicians who object to the unauthorized use of their work in his events and campaign materials, as reported by Billboard.
This persistent issue was highlighted again in just two weeks in August 2024, when major artists Beyonce, Foo Fighters, and Jack White publicly voiced their protests, echoing a long history of refusal dating back to Trump's 2016 nomination.
Despite facing constant public reprimands from opposing musicians over his 12-year political career, Trump has continued to receive support from other artists, including Jason Aldean, Ye, Kid Rock, and Sexyy Red.
Meanwhile, the 2024 election cycle has seen Kamala Harris garnering widespread support from various figures in the music industry. Since the start of Trump's political journey, artists have repeatedly condemned his use of their work and, in many cases, threatened legal action.
Billboard has summarized the extensive list of musicians who have criticized Donald Trump for using their music without permission. Prominent names include Jack White/White Stripes, Isaac Hayes, Guns N' Roses, George Harrison, Foo Fighters, Earth Wind & Fire, Celine Dion, Brendon Urie, Beyonce, and Adele.
Sabrina Carpenter's Recent Protest
The controversy recently expanded when pop star Sabrina Carpenter strongly objected to the use of her song in a video shared by the White House, which promoted the arrest of undocumented immigrants by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to People. The short video featured raids and arrests set to Carpenter's song "Juno," complete with provocative lyrics and narration.
In a tweet quoted by People, Carpenter condemned the use of her music: "this video is evil and disgusting. Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda."
She firmly asserted that she did not authorize the use of her song for the video, emphasizing her opposition to immigration policies that she deemed "inhumane."
White House Spokesperson Responds
Although the singer's criticism went viral, government spokesperson Abigail Jackson conveyed a defiant message to People: "Here’s a Short n’ Sweet message for Sabrina Carpenter: we won’t apologize for deporting dangerous criminal illegal murderers, rapists, and pedophiles from our country. Anyone who would defend these sick monsters must be stupid, or is it slow?"
This statement, which appeared to mock Carpenter for standing firm on her artistic rights, has only further amplified the situation. Sabrina Carpenter's name now joins the growing list of musicians who have publicly criticized the unauthorized use of their music in government campaigns.
