TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spanish meteorologists warned that Tuesday, June 23, could be the hottest day in June as an intense heat dome pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius across much of the country.
As ANTARA reported, the highest warning level was imposed by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) in parts of Andalusia, the Basque Region and Cantabria, where temperatures are expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius.
Around 17 of Spain's 50 provincial capitals are expected to experience temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Tropical nights, when temperatures don't drop below 20 degrees Celsius, are also expected to be widespread, making it difficult for buildings to cool down.
"Tuesday could become the hottest day ever recorded in June and come close to becoming the hottest day on record overall," said RTVE meteorologist Marc Santandreu. The heat wave began on Sunday and has already broken several temperature records.
AEMET said nighttime temperatures in parts of southeastern Spain remained above 30 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. This is unprecedented for June in the Iberian Peninsula. The city of Palma de Mallorca also recorded the hottest June night in its observation history.
The extreme heat wave was triggered by a heat dome that stretched across much of Western Europe, along with the influx of extremely hot and dry air masses from the Sahara Desert to the north.
AEMET reports that a high-pressure system over mainland Europe and a low-pressure system west of the Iberian Peninsula are pushing Saharan air masses northward.
According to the Climate Shift Index, climate change makes this extreme heat wave at least five times more likely. The combination of these weather patterns and intense summer sunshine is expected to produce very high temperatures that will persist through at least midweek.
Several other European countries, including France, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, have issued their highest level of heat warnings.
