TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI, Perplexity, and Yahoo are queuing up to buy Chrome, if the browser has to be divested by Google due to an antitrust case in the United States. The interest of these three big companies was revealed in the legal process that is currently entangling Google.
The tech company was previously considered too dominant in the field of search engines and advertising, and even suspected of monopolizing such services.
OpenAI was the first party mentioned in one of the moments of the trial at the US Department of Justice. The trial has been ongoing since April 21, 2025.
Citing 9to5Google, an executive representative of OpenAI expressed interest in buying Chrome to the judge. The AI developer stated that they had made an offer to Google to use Google's search technology in ChatGPT. However, the offer was rejected.
"Google’s API… would enable us to provide a better product to users," as quoted from OpenAI's submission to Google, cited from 9to5Google on Monday, April 28, 2025.
Another browser developer, Perplexity, also expressed its interest. "We could do it," said Dmitry Shevelenko, Perplexity's business director. The statement was made by Dmitry when answering the judge's question about the readiness of other parties to run Chromium- the open-source base of the browser- on the scale of Google without reducing quality or burdening users with costs.
Yahoo is the third company showing interest in buying Chrome. The entity, often seen as a pioneer of the global internet, is currently developing a prototype of their own browser.
Yahoo Search General Manager Brian Provost said buying Chrome would accelerate their target. He also estimated that Yahoo's search engine market share could increase to double digits if the Chrome acquisition materializes.
"Chrome is “arguably the most important strategic player on the web," said Provost.
As of the writing of this article, there has been no final decision on the fate of Chrome. However, the interest of Google's competitors confirms the vital position of Chrome in the current internet browser industry.
