TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia agreed to take steps to gradually restore bilateral relations in a trilateral meeting with the Philippine President on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Cebu.

"The Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia agreed to task their Foreign Ministers to work together to develop measures to build trust and confidence and gradually restore bilateral relations," according to a statement from the Thai Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Thailand also expressed its appreciation to the Philippines, as the 2026 ASEAN Chair, for its initiative in holding the meeting and its support for dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia.

The statement stated that the parties welcomed Thailand and Cambodia's shared commitment to strengthening the ceasefire and promoting constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution based on good neighborly relations.

In 2025, the territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia escalated, triggering two armed border clashes within a year.

The clashes involved the use of heavy weapons, artillery, rockets and military aircraft before the two countries signed a ceasefire agreement on December 27, 2025.
