TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As alluring as the universe may be, celestial spectacles have an unmatched way of leaving skygazers even more mesmerized by their grandeur. August 2, 2027, stands among the most striking examples, when the longest solar eclipse of the century will grace the skies of three continents at once.

Dubbed the “eclipse of the century,” this rare total solar eclipse more than earns its name. With an unusually long duration and a path that won’t be replicated again anywhere on Earth for the rest of the 21st century, it’s a truly once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon.

To help you prepare, here’s when and where to witness the 2027 total solar eclipse, citing various sources.

When Is the 2027 Solar Eclipse Set to Be Visible?

According to NASA’s eclipse data, the 2027 total solar eclipse will occur on August 2, 2027, delivering the longest eclipse seen in 100 years, with totality lasting six minutes and 23 seconds.

During totality, midday will be transformed in ways rarely experienced. Daylight will dim into an eerie twilight, temperatures will drop noticeably, and the dramatic alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth will become the sole focus.

This rare spectacle will place the 2027 eclipse among the most significant astronomical events of modern times, following the last comparable total solar eclipse on July 11, 1991, which swept across Hawaii, Mexico, and much of Central and South America, reaching a peak duration of six minutes and 53 seconds.

After 2027, another eclipse of similar length is not expected until 2114, as reported by Marie Claire.

Where to See the 2027 Solar Eclipse?

While long-duration solar eclipses often unfold over remote locations, the 2027 total solar eclipse will sweep across three continents: Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

The eclipse will first make landfall in Morocco and southern Spain, before crossing Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, reaching its most dramatic point over Egypt. From there, the path of totality will continue across the Middle East, concluding in Yemen and along the Somali coast.

What Makes the 2027 Solar Eclipse So Special?

The 2027 solar eclipse stands out for its exceptional accessibility, even though it is only the second-longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century. Yes, you read that right.

The record for the longest eclipse of the century belongs to the event on July 22, 2009, which lasted an extraordinary six minutes and 39.5 seconds. However, that eclipse reached its peak largely over the open Pacific Ocean, with visibility limited mainly to the remote and uninhabited North Iwo Jima, according to 9News.

By contrast, the 2027 solar eclipse marks a new height of opportunity for stargazers. Its path of totality will pass over major population centers and well-known tourist destinations, allowing millions to witness the spectacle without the need to travel to isolated or inaccessible locations.
