The Rise of Noctourism: Exploring Tourist Attractions After Dark

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As dusk falls, a new adventure begins. The trend of nighttime travel, known as noctourism, is gaining popularity among travelers. Imagine gazing at the aurora borealis cutting through the Norwegian sky while enjoying the sensation of forest bathing, or speeding in an open jeep in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, studying hyenas under the full moon.

Travel + Leisure has dubbed noctourism as the hottest trend of 2025, driven by the peak of the sun's cycle that makes the northern lights more spectacular. A survey by Booking.com also notes that 59 percent of American travelers are enticed by nighttime sky-themed tourism, from star bathing to tracking constellations.

Lauren Gumport from Faye Travel Insurance said that noctourism, or nocturnal tourism, involves exploring destinations and tourist attractions after dark. "Activities range from stargazing in certified dark sky parks to moonlit wildlife safaris, offering travelers a new perspective on familiar landscapes," she was quoted as saying by HuffPost.

Some Noctourism Tips for First-Timers

1. In-depth Research

If you are interested in this travel trend, it is advisable to conduct in-depth research, starting with choosing where to go and what types of activities you seek. If you want to observe the stars, identify a certified dark sky sanctuary or a region famous for clear night skies. Other options include nighttime safaris or cultural nighttime events that suit your interests.

2. Understanding the Aurora Cycle

Similarly, nocturnal experiences such as aurora borealis require thorough planning. Valerie Dulin from Tauck said that the aurora has an 11-year cycle and is expected to peak in 2025. Meaning, its appearance may not reach as far south in the following years.

She added that from February to March, the chances of clear skies are higher, due to shorter daylight hours, so observations can start earlier in the evening. Moreover, travelers can also use apps to track the likelihood of aurora appearances. "If you’re going before the really dry months, it can be hit or miss," she said.

3. Consider Guided Tours

Emmanuel Burgio, the founder of Blue Parallel tour operator, recommends guided tours to facilitate and avoid additional stress. "Pick a destination that shines after dark, go with a trusted small group tour operator, and pack smart. The best travel moments often happen when the sun goes down," Leigh Barnes, the president of Americas at Intrepid Travel, weighed in.

4. Consider Your Safety

Another thing to consider is safety. In addition to research, Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip, suggests preparing for travel insurance, especially coverage for medical emergencies, evacuations, and 24-hour assistance. Just in case something goes wrong in the dark.

5. Pack Wisely

As for packing, it is best to pack wisely, prioritizing essential and high-quality items, such as warm clothing (even in warmer climates, temperatures can drop at night), and a flashlight. Finally, respect local customs. Pay attention to local traditions and laws, especially in protected natural areas.
