Trump Announces Possible Nuclear Talks with Iran, Tehran Yet to Confirm

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States Donald Trump announced that the U.S. plans to hold a meeting with Iran next week to discuss the possibility of reaching a nuclear agreement. However, Iran has stated that it has not yet decided whether it will participate in the talks.

Trump said that communication with Iran is already underway, both through direct contact and through intermediaries.

Speaking at a press conference during the NATO event on Wednesday, June 25, Trump also noted that there is no guarantee the discussions will result in an agreement for Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran has not made any decision to begin nuclear negotiations with the United States. He made this statement during an interview with Iranian state television on Thursday, June 26.

Araghchi recalled that in previous negotiations, the U.S. had supported Israel’s attack on Iran and later launched its own airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities.

In the recent negotiations, they tried to lure us into giving up the rights of our nation. When some certain events occurred, they imposed war and unleashed the criminal Zionist (Israeli) regime to carry out attacks,” Araghchi said.

He added that the U.S. had betrayed diplomatic efforts during the previous talks, which has influenced Iran's current stance. “Nevertheless, diplomacy continues, and I am in contact with several foreign ministers,” he said.

Araghchi also responded to Trump’s recent statement about a planned meeting next week, denying that any such talks are scheduled. “There are no arrangements for any fresh round of indirect talks with the US so far. Their statements are full of contradictions,” he told Iranian state television.

A 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran broke out on June 13, following an Israeli airstrike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Iran responded with retaliatory attacks. The violence resulted in more than 600 deaths in Iran and around 20 in Israel.

The conflict ended with a ceasefire brokered by the United States, which took effect on June 24.
