TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump has agreed to meet Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa during his visit to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, according to a White House official.
"President Trump has agreed to greet the president of Syria while he is in Saudi Arabia tomorrow," the official said on Tuesday evening, requesting anonymity, Anadolu reported.
The meeting is expected to take place in Riyadh, where Trump arrived on Tuesday morning as part of his first foreign trip since taking office in January.
His regional tour also includes planned visits to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Trump told reporters on Monday before leaving for Saudi Arabia that he was considering lifting US sanctions on Syria, saying he wanted to create a "fresh start" for Damascus.
"We have to make a decision on sanctions, which we may lift. We may lift them from Syria because we want to give them a fresh start. President Erdogan has asked me about that, a lot of people have asked me about that," Trump told reporters at the White House.
The statement signaled that the West would soon lift sanctions on Syria as it seeks to rebuild after nearly 15 years of devastating civil war.
Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on December 8, ending the Baath Party's rule that began in 1963, after anti-regime groups seized control of Damascus.
